Neighborhood deals: Free movie tickets for recycling at Fretz Park

It's time for the city's annual recycling roundup. If you're a do-good-for planet earth type, then you probably already knew about this and have all your recyclables bagged and ready to go.
But if you're not so eco-minded, here's an incentive: You get free movie tickets just for bringing recyclable goods to Fretz Park Recreation Center this Saturday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. You can bring things like scrap metal, old electronics (video games, cell phones, computers, calculators, etc.), small kitchen appliances, clothes, shoes, used books, glass, paper and plastic. There will also be an onsite document shredding service. After you make your donation, just present your proof of residency (utility bills or drivers license) and you'll get 2 free Cinemark movie passes. But those free tickets are only being handed out while supplies last, so you'd better get there early.

Neighborhood deals: Shoe Pavilion closing sale

Shoe Pavilion is closing about 40 of its stores, including the one here in our neighborhood. The shoe and accessory store is having a big going-out-of-business sale right now on all its inventory. Between this closing sale, and the Dillards closing sale, you should be set for all your back-to-school discounts.

Neighborhood deals: $2 iced grande beverages at Starbucks

You know the economy is tight when Starbucks starts lowering its prices. The coffee chain is running a new promotion: If you go to Starbucks in the morning, hang on to your receipt. You can bring that receipt back the same day after 2 p.m. and get a $2 iced grande beverage of your choice. That's about a 50% discount.
You must have your receipt from that morning to get the $2 deal. The promotion starts today and runs until Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Addison's Symphonic Saturdays kick off this weekend

Just a reminder for all you Far North Dallas neighbors: Addison's free symphony concert series kicks off this weekend. Every Saturday night this month you can go to Esplanade Park at 8 for a free concert by the Dallas Wind Symphony or the Richardson Wind Symphony. (The Dallas Wind Symphony performs tonight and Saturday, Aug. 16--and theRichardson Wind Symphony will preform Saturdays, Aug. 9 and 23.)
I haven't seen either of these symphonies in action, but I did go to the last free Dallas Symphony Orchestra concert at Fretz Park and that was great. You simply can't beat watching the sun set to a symphonic soundtrack.

Neighborhood deals: Wi-Fi discount at Fish on Fire

Attention techies and bargain-hunters, I just found out about a cool deal at Fish on Fire. If you swing by any day between 2-5 p.m. and use their free Wi Fi, you get $2 off any seafood basket, plus you get half-off desert. I ate dinner there tonight so it was too late for me to cash in on the deal, but I'll certainly keep in mind next time I need a place to get some work done. I've eaten here a few times. The grilled fish tacos, frozen margaritas, and key lime pie are all good. There's also live music here on the weekends from 7:30-10 p.m.

Neighborhood deals: Free facials at Nordstrom

On Wednesday, July 23, you can get free 40-minute facial when you swing by the Clarins Skin Care Center at the Nordstrom inside the Galleria. Experts there will analyze your skin type first, then customize a facial that's right for you. The complimentary offer runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.--but space is limited, so if you're interested make sure you call and reserve your seat ASAP: 972.702.0055.

AMC Theatres offers discounted tickets for seniors and students

A few months ago, to the dismay of high school and college students, AMC Theatres took away student prices for movies. So instead of paying my usual discounted $7 ticket (I'm a soon-to-be sophomore at SMU), I had to pony up $10 for an adult ticket. A mighty big difference in my eyes. Now, back from a long and missed absence, student fares have been reinstated by AMC — but only for one day.

All day every Thursday, students can get in for $7. (Just for the record, other locations such as the Angelika Theatre still offer student discounts every day.) AMC also offers seniors discounts all day every Tuesday for $6.

Neighborhood deals: Kids eat free at Hibashi

A couple of weeks ago I told you about the opening of Hibashi on this blog. It's a new Japanese restaurant near the Galleria. In an attempt to bolster the buzz, the folks there are now offering a new promotion: If you swing by anytime before Sunday, August 31, your kid eats free. The catch is that your child must be 10 or younger, and only one child per family gets to cash in on the deal.
