The words "church" and "anatomically-correct doll" are rarely ever used in the same sentence, but I assure you, they go together perfectly in this weekend's event at Spring Valley United Methodist Church.
Spring Valley has turned the first Friday of every month into a discussion of books and movies, and how they relate to ethical Christian living. This Friday's showing is "Lars and the Real Girl", which is probably the best movie I've seen in the last year, and also gets closer to the heart of what a church should be than possibly any movie I've ever seen.
Ryan Gosling stars as the painfully introverted lead character, Lars, who is constantly pressured about girls and dating by his fellow small-town residents until one day, he brings home a guest — an anatomically-correct doll named Bianca, whom he explains is his girlfriend (and also a wheelchair-confined missionary). Lars is pure-hearted in his intentions toward Biana, so there are no overtly raunchy jokes, but it's one of those movies that you may not want to have to explain to the kids why you are laughing.
The reaction of Lars's family and of the town are what make the movie so heartwarming, and will make this a great topic of discussion at Spring Valley on Friday night. The church is offering a light supper at 6 p.m. before the film begins at 6:45 p.m.
